I'm Amanda Lee [don't call me Amanda]. This is my daily celebration of the things I love best: style, organization, creativity, happiness. I'm a copy editor, writer, and general freelance hero...if you're looking for someone. I love learning, good design, urban density, public transit, dogs, and Dunkin' Donuts coffee. Someone once told me I was the most unpredictable person he'd ever met, and I enjoy living up to that every day.

Have you been to Chicago? What kinds of things should I do/see/visit/buy there?

Hey, lovelies! Did you have a good week? Are you staying warm and healthy despite all the snow that seems to be blanketing the northern hemisphere? I’ve been working my ass off, as usual, but I’m stoked to be taking a trip next weekend.

Yes, you heard it right here, Amanda Lee is going on the road. The Minor Leagues have a brief midwest tour planned, including two stops in Chicago. So this week I’ll be working extra hours, packing a lot, planning for a dog sitter, and forward-posting so I can enjoy the road time to the max.

So here’s what I want to know from you.

Have you been to Chicago? What kinds of things should I do/see/visit/buy there?

My dad’s family is from right outside Chicago, so I’ve visited a ton. But I’m always up for new perspectives and experiences. Specifically, I want to know what thrift stores/handmade goods shops/yarn shops/Thai restaurants are awesome.

Also, part 2:

Are you in or around Chicago? Would you like to come see my band?

Let me know, and I’ll get you the details later.

Did you go to school? What did you study? Is it directly related to what you do now? Do you regret not doing something different?

How’s your weekend, hun? Have you been relaxing? Doing important stuff? What did you get up to?

I started the weekend with a long meeting. Yes, that’s right, I stayed at work late to Take Care of Business [which in my mind is always capitalized like Getting Shit Done—you can even abbreviate them the same way and combine them. GTD and TCB, mf'er!] and then rushed home to crash for awhile before working a bit on some freelance stuff. I worked all day Saturday, met friends for sushi, and then spent the majority of my Saturday night and Sunday Getting Shit Done. It may or may not have included an entire bag of Almond Joy minibars.

Now it’s time for the Sunday Survey. I’ve been thinking about the effect my education has had on everything I’m doing now, and how nothing I’m doing now seems to have anything to do with what I studied in school, or what I thought I wanted to do. What’s more, it seems like a ton of people I know feel the same way – went to art school, but working as web developers. Studied fashion design, but currently working for a nonprofit. Wanted to be a journalist, but settling for waiting tables while he freelanced. Starting a company with an economics degree, but working days as a system admin. Majored in liberal arts, but substitute teaching…or teaching English abroad.

What I want to know is, did this happen to you too? Did you go to school? What did you study? Is it directly related to what you do now? Do you regret not doing something different?

Tell me your thoughts. Ask your friends to do the same. I’m curious.

[source] So, kids, how is 2010 treating you? Have you kept up your New Year’s Resolutions? I’m proud to report that I have, for the most part. Have you touched base with any old friends, or made any new ones? I’ve met some cool kiddos via the IFB community, and I’m looking forward to meeting more new people next month when my band goes on tour. Woot! How are you eating? In the past week my gentleman friend and I have been on a soup frenzy – so far we’ve made Thai tom yum soup and spicy sweet potato/coconut milk soup. Upcoming: pear/butternut squash curry and sweet potato pumpkin bisque. [We gotta keep warm somehow...] Tell me what’s new! I’ll post some highlights next week.
