I'm Amanda Lee [don't call me Amanda]. This is my daily celebration of the things I love best: style, organization, creativity, happiness. I'm a copy editor, writer, and general freelance hero...if you're looking for someone. I love learning, good design, urban density, public transit, dogs, and Dunkin' Donuts coffee. Someone once told me I was the most unpredictable person he'd ever met, and I enjoy living up to that every day.

HEAR HEAR! Great list! A thing I'd emphasis is knowing that you have options and an exit strategy (goes hand in hand with your last point). ALWAYS know your options and your exit strategy. :)

Thanks so much for this, Amanda. Such great suggestions. It's so hard for me to find time and motivation to practice for auditions because I'm teaching privately about 20 students a week. I don't have a 9-5, but I still sit there in lessons thinking "oh my GOD is this what I am going to do the rest of my life?"

This list is fantastic. I do have one thing to add, though. I've worked in a lot of jobs where I hated the work but really liked the people. This helps. A lot. It makes getting up early or going in late a bearable drudgery instead of something that makes you want to tear your eyes out. In essence: even if you don't love what you're doing right now, love the people you're doing it with.

Thanks to Mr. Hathaway (@strutting) who sent me here.

For random gap-year employment, I have to say that my job is fairly excellent. A cushy library gig with lots of downtime to play on the computer isn't a bad way to spend twelve months. On the other hand, it doesn't pay well enough that I can save very much, and if my ipod dies while I'm at work I'm in danger of passing out from boredom. Every few weeks I have a miniature meltdown over feeling like I'm not accomplishing anything. I try to make the most of it by making sure that I spend more of the aforementioned downtime doing things like blogging and learning facts/recipes/beading patterns than playing solitaire. It helps that my boss is one of the nicest, most dedicated people I've ever met (which seems a pretty rare situation), so when I'm feeling rebelliously unproductive I just remind myself that I don't want to disappoint her.

My job is fun sometimes and horrendously stressful other times. To cope, I do a lot of these things. I set goals for myself during the week. Instead of getting home and just vegging out, I make to do lists at work to complete when I get home. I'll be extremely meticulous about these lists and even include bathroom breaks and dinner time just so I stay on task. And it's not like the things I do outside of work are necessarily that important or even all that time sensitive. Just things I enjoy or make my life outside of work a bit more pleasant.
