The Secret Society of LadyBloggers

08.27.08 | Comment?

Last week on Ask.Metafilter, a question came up about a handful of my favorite girl bloggers and their respective blogs: Gala, Nubby, Gilda, and Star, to name a few. Do they know each other? Do they comprise a movement in blogging? What is this phenomenon called

Well! Some of the girls have noticed and written about it. I think it’s safe to say that none of them think of this as an underground movement or “the next big thing in blogging”. It’s merely a group of colleagues (who also happen to be friend) that are passionate about similar things, and as a result are über-supportive of one another in the form of link traffic and (digital?) verbal encouragement.

I think it’s worth putting on record that for me, each of these girls is an inspiration. I admit I’ve been blogging since 2003 (via LiveJournal, baby!), but I never would have thought about blogging on a professional level if I hadn’t stumbled into Gala Darling, who is one of my most prominent role models ever.

However, I think it’s also worth saying that anyone who commits to anything, blogging or otherwise, without letting discouragement, negativity, or excuses creep in deserves commendation—and all the more if they can do it while being positive, supportive, and inspiring to other committed and creative individuals. These girls—the alleged LadyBloggers—have done this very well, but I don’t think you need to be a LadyBlogger, necessarily, in order to do it.
