On the night after my 24th birthday, a good friend took me to see the Know Theatre’s production of Tick, Tick, BOOM! I really enjoyed it–like everyone else on the planet, I’d been aware of Jonathan Larson from Rent, but this was the first time I’d seen any of his other work.
The entire show was about the choice between hanging onto a dream that seems ever more unlikely as you get older, or going a safer route for the sake of income or relationships. The final song of the show featured the following quote:
“Actions speak louder than words.”
A quick Google search reveals this to be an approximation of a longer quote from Mark Twain, but I think that it stands alone the way that Larson wrote it–and even stronger outside of the context of the show. I know we all know a lot of people that say a lot of things that they mean to put into action, but their words lead to no action whatsoever. It’s easier to talk about doing something than to actually do it…
…so make this the week that you actually do it. You know you want to!
